Using 32-bit float audio on the Nikon ZR

The Nikon ZR is the first camera in the world to offer internal recording of 32-bit float audio. This high-resolution audio offers huge dynamic range when recording, meaning sudden loud noises won’t clip and distort and soft noises can be boosted without adding in unwanted noise caused by signal processing. It’s a fantastic tool, especially for situations where your noise levels might be unpredictable, such as documentary making or if you’re an indie filmmaker who doesn’t have the capacity to keep checking levels while also trying to film a scene.

It’s simple to set up. First of all, you need to set your camera to a supported Codec. It won’t work in Auto mode so set it to Manual and set the camera to record in N-RAW 12-bit, R3D 12-bit, ProRes RAW HQ 12-bit, ProRes 422 HQ 10-bit, or H.265 (10-bit or 8-bit). Then in the video recording menu scroll to 32-bit float audio and switch on.
